Moshal Program Scholarship

The Moshal Program is much more than a scholarship program

We are a global organisation operating in South Africa and Israel, working for social change, providing thousands of young people from challenging, disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds with an unparalleled opportunity to turn their lives around through higher education.

The Program was founded jointly by philanthropist Martin Moshal, an entrepreneur and businessman known for investing in leading real estate, hi-tech, and innovation companies who is also a founding partner of the Entrée Capital VC fund, and Yael Lavie, an executive with extensive experience in the worlds of finance and real estate, who currently serves as chairperson of the Moshal Program and of Bar-Lev Hi-Tech Park.

The Moshal Scholarship Program is highly selective and targets resilient, high-achieving South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

To be eligible for the 2026/2027 intake, you generally need to meet the following criteria:

1. Academic Requirements

  • Performance: A minimum of 70% in English, Mathematics (not Literacy), and Physical Science and/or Accounting.

  • Study Level: You must be a Grade 12 learner (Matric) or have recently completed Matric and are entering your first year of undergraduate study.

2. Financial & Personal Criteria

  • Household Income: Your combined gross family income must not exceed R200,000 per year (before deductions).

  • Background: The program specifically seeks “motivated, determined young people from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.”

3. Eligible Institutions

You must be accepted or currently applying to one of the following South African universities:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT)

  • University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)

  • University of Pretoria (UP)

  • University of Johannesburg (UJ)

  • Stellenbosch University (SUN)

  • University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)

  • University of the Free State (UFS)

  • University of the Western Cape (UWC)

  • Rhodes University (RU)

  • Nelson Mandela University (NMU)

4. Approved Fields of Study

The program only funds degrees that lead to high-demand careers, primarily in STEM and Commerce:

  • Medicine & Health: Medicine (MBChB), Dentistry, Veterinary Science, and Pharmacy (Pharmacy often specifically at UKZN).

  • Engineering: All major branches (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, etc.).

  • Technology: Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, and Information Systems.

  • Commerce & Math: Accounting (CA stream), Actuarial Science, Economics, Statistics, and Investment Management.

5. What the Scholarship Covers

  • Full Tuition Fees: Direct payment to your university.

  • Allowances: Living and meal allowances to ensure you can focus on your studies.

  • Equipment: A laptop allowance to assist with digital learning.

  • Professional Development: One-on-one mentoring, soft-skills training, and career guidance.

  • Community: Access to a network of current scholars and alumni who “pass the baton” to new students.

6. Core Selection Criteria

To be successful, you generally need to meet these strict requirements:

  • Academic: At least 70% in English, Mathematics, and Physical Science and/or Accounting.

  • Financial: A gross household income of R200,000 or less per year.

  • Institutions: You must be accepted or registered at a partner university (Wits, UCT, UP, UJ, SUN, UKZN, UFS, RU, NMU, or UWC).

  • Fields: Only specific high-demand degrees like Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, Computer Science, and CA-track Commerce.

7. Required Documentation

You will need to have these ready for your digital profile:

  • Certified ID copies (yours and your parents/guardians).

  • Proof of household income (payslips, bank statements, or SASSA letters).

  • Academic records (Grade 11 final results or latest university transcript).

  • Proof of university application/acceptance and proof of NSFAS application.

Note: The program frequently operates as a “Top-Up” bursary to provide a comprehensive support package (including laptops, mentoring, and soft-skills training).. This means they often expect you to apply for NSFAS first; Moshal then covers the remaining “gap” costs and provides the mentoring and extra allowances that NSFAS doesn’t include.
